Macular degeneration
Learn everything about us and our products.

Macular Degeneration is an eye condition that affects your visual acuity and causes your sight to deteriorate. This is because the cones in the macula start to die off. The cones allow us to see contrast, colour and details. The macula is a small area, just a few millimeters wide, in the middle of the retina and is also known as the yellow spot. This part of the retina lets us see sharply, read, drive and recognise faces, among others.
Macular degeneration causes significant visual impairment, but this is usually a length process and does not typically lead to complete vision loss. Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the most common type and occurs only in people over 50. Not all patients, however, experience the same symptoms. Some people start to see flecks, eye floaters, a black spot, or blurry spots. Others may experience distortion and wavy vision. There are two different types of MD: ‘dry macular degeneration’, which is characterised by slow progression of the disease, and ‘wet macular degeneration’, which can be a very quick process, resulting in decreased sharpness of sight, the appearance of distortions and blurry vision from one day to the next.
MD is also hereditary: if someone in your family has MD, there is a chance that you can get it yourself. A healthy lifestyle is very important and can postpone or delay the process. Smoking is a major risk factor, as it breaks down the antioxidants that protect the retina. Other risk factors include excessive sunlight, high cholesterol and drinking alcohol.
Macular Degeneration Treatment
Unfortunately, there is no treatment yet for ‘dry Macular Degeneration’, which is the most common type. In case of ‘wet Macular Degeneration’, it is important that the condition be detected as early as possible so that treatment can be started. Any remaining vision can be retained by means of injections and medicine. Unfortunately, this treatment is only temporary, as the deterioration of your eyesight will resume after a number of years.
Nutrition to combat Macular Degeneration
Nutrition is very important. The cells in the macula are very sensitive to damage caused by free radicals, which cause cones to die off. Antioxidants counter this. You can get these antioxidants from eating fruit and vegetables, but also by taking nutritional supplements. It is likely that taking various antioxidants together leads to better protection than when taking them separately. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are two antioxidants that can reduce the risk of MD. We highly recommend our nutritional supplements. Make sure to consult with your doctor before you start taking supplements with your medication.
